The story behind Stephan
Stephan began his career as a broker in 1999 at a large office in Amsterdam. Six years ago, he made the move to VLIEG Realtors. He started at VLIEG in Amsterdam, but Alex soon asked him to man the Hoofddorp office. His focus is on selling and buying homes, where the advisory role is paramount. Stephan often finds that this personal approach is lacking in other brokerage firms, where clients are often treated as numbers and viewings are handled fleetingly. At VLIEG, he gets the chance to really give tours and offer personal attention, something he really appreciates.
Selling former rental properties
Stephan lives in Beverwijk, but has a strong connection to Hoofddorp. Eighteen years ago, he began selling former rental properties for an institutional investor in Hoofddorp, including the investment arm of a pension fund. He sold homes to sitting tenants or on the open market if the tenant did not want to buy. His work took him through various neighborhoods and eventually to the center of Hoofddorp.
In his spare time, Stephan enjoys playing sports. He likes to go skiing with his son and friends, and also enjoys a game of golf. Travel is another passion of Stephan’s. Asia is no stranger to him, and he has just returned from Australia, where his son is an intern. Thanks to VLIEG, for the first time he could go on vacation for four weeks at a stretch, something that normally would not be possible. Stephan appreciates the flexibility and opportunities he gets at VLIEG.

Stephan Schipper is an indispensable force within VLIEG Realtors. His day begins with checking his mail and planning his tasks, often from home. He regularly starts his day with appointments such as sales calls, viewings or purchase consultations. He prepares well for this. Stephan has a broad focus: in addition to Hoofddorp, he targets the entire Haarlemmermeer and even the Bulb Region. He sees opportunities in these regions and is working hard to put VLIEG firmly on the map there. This he does along with his colleagues from VLIEG Hoofddorp. His dedication and broad outlook make him a valuable player on the team.
What makes you happy?
Stephan becomes happy from giving good advice and seeing happy faces. People appreciate his reliability and the sound advice he gives. The happiness of his customers is paramount. The financial reward is nice, but his real satisfaction comes from fully satisfied customers. With his 25 years of experience as a real estate agent, he has a wealth of knowledge, which is sometimes still underestimated. Stephan values the mutual trust he builds with his clients. He also derives great pleasure from working with colleagues. For example, he recently replaced a colleague during her maternity leave and put on impressive performances with another colleague. These joint successes give him a real buzz.
What is your greatest success story?
Stephan: “I have several great success stories, but one really stands out. Once I sold a property owned by Burgundian owners from Brabant. They were pleasantly surprised at how much their house had become worth. We made a special brokerage agreement: up to a certain amount I would get 1% and for everything above that I would get 50%. In the end, the property was bought by a businessman and the brokerage was really a top reward. Although this was not for VLIEG, it remains a wonderful story from my past.
Transferring people by ferry
“In Amsterdam I experienced special things more often than in Hoofddorp. Nevertheless, I also have beautiful experiences here. A nice example is when I had to ferry people across and bring them back to their cars; such small things make me happy. Another special story took place in Nieuweveen, where I had a sales meeting at an old mill. Of the four mills in the area, one still exists. This one has been capped off and converted into a residence. This mill, which used to pump out polders, still has a stream running underneath it. It’s really cool to work in such unique locations,” Stephan emphasizes.

Carel Bos: “My best success story played out during the challenging corona period. I was dealing with a complex situation where a client was looking for a specific type of home in the high price segment of Bergen aan Zee. The house that perfectly suited their needs did not seem to be on the market at first. Still, I suggested viewing another house that at first glance did not quite meet expectations. However, I sensed that this house had potential to fulfill their dreams, and urged them to give it a chance.
He continues: “After some hesitation, my clients went with me to the viewing. By creatively addressing their needs, they began to see the potential of the house. Eventually they bought the house and now they are still incredibly happy with it. This success was extremely satisfying for me, not only because of the sale itself, but also because we are still in touch. It confirms that listening to, and truly understanding your clients, can be the key to a successful deal.”
