In the seventeenth century wealthy residents bought pieces of land in this part of the city to build gardens and estates. The leafy avenues and parks are reminders of these earlier times. Culture lovers also get their fill in this district: the Plantage area has the highest museum density in the city and other hotspots such as the Artis zoo, Carré Theatre, the National Opera & Ballet and the Hortus Botanicus Gardens are also located in this area.
